In today’s online edition (and in print on Sunday), my first byline in the Times: “This Is My Voice One Year on T.” This article was several months in the making, starting as more as a reported piece. Then, it became clear that something more personal was what was needed. You can read it for free here.
A lot of interviews didn’t make their way into the final article, but nonetheless informed it greatly: Conversations with Elijah McCormack, Lucas Bouk, LJ White (whose new EP is a must-listen), Bryce McClendon (whose podcast Beyond Travesti is also a must-listen), Teiya Kasahara (whose Project T just launched this summer), Ari Agha (whose scientific paper is a must-read, and whose Key of T project is also very interesting), and Poe Allphin (whose article in Resonance should be added to the very top of your list). Some other resources: Opera MODO’s TNBGD Directory (please, please hire trans singers), NYU’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic (which offers free, online gender affirming speech classes), as well as The Voice Lab and Trans Voice Studio (for trans-focused singing lessons).
This article would not have made it if not for Rachel Saltz’s sensitive edits, Lindsay Perryman’s attention-grabbing photos (maybe I should have brushed my teeth better…), encouragement from colleagues Steve Smith and Zachary Woolfe, not to mention my wonderful singing teacher Daniel Moody. Lastly, I want to thank my in-house proofreader Jonah Piersanti, who probably read about 20 drafts and said “I love it” about each one.
This is amaaaazing!! So cool.
Just saw this piece in the NYT’s briefing email, but didn’t realise it was you! Congratulations! I refuse to pay for a subscription though, so it’s lovely to have a link so I can read it 💜
